Important Client Alert – Spam Email from ASIC

April 21, 2017

We have recently become aware of a spam email which appears to come from ASIC. This looks almost identical to a business name renewal email that ASIC would ordinarily send directly to you, the client, apart from the following differences:

1. A legitimate email would come from asic.transaction.no-reply@asic.gov.au. The spam email comes from asic.transaction.no-reply@austgov.com.

2. A legitimate email would be ‘regarding the renewal for [BUSINESS NAME] registration due date [date]’. The spam email is one ‘regarding the renewal for your company’ – these emails never relate to companies, only business name registrations.

3. The link would ‘remain active for 30 days’, not 31 days.

4. The link to the Privacy Policy should start with ‘https’, indicating it is a link to a secure website.

If you have received an email like this, please don’t click on any links or reply. If in doubt please contact your accountant to ensure this is not legitimate and does not require further action.
